GIS Day Celebration 2019
On the auspicious occasion of the International GIS Day 2019, Nepal GIS Society (NEGISS) organized seminar on 23rd November, 2019. The program was chaired by Vice-president of the NEGISS Mrs. Sushila Rajbhandari and graced by Prof. Upendra Man Malla as the Chief Guest. During the program, delivering the welcome remarks, the General Secretary of the NEGISS, Mr. Govinda Joshi highlighted the overall activities of the society. The program was moderated by Dr. Bhola Nath Dhakal, Secretary of the NEGISS. In the program, there were more than fifty participants from various organizations including academia. During the program, activities accomplished by NEGISS in the last 24 years had been displayed in posters.In the program, two technical presentations were delivered. The first presentation was on the use of GIS application in the development sector by Mr. Indrasharan KC. Mr. KC well explained the application of GIS in election monitoring and also highlighted the use of Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (Drone) in spatial analysis and research. Another presentation was on the comparative GIS based assessment of landslide susceptibility of Chepe River Corridor of Gandaki River Basin, Nepal by Ms. Kripa Shrestha. Ms. Shrestha highlighted the use of GIS application for assessing landslide vulnerability and susceptibility in the western Mid-hills of Nepal.
The Adviser of the NEGISS and President of the Nepal Geographical Society, Prof. Dr. Narendra Raj Khanal delivered remarks focusing the diverse use of GIS in multiple sectors. Prof. Khanal also highlighted the contribution of the non-profit society in research and development of the nation. The Chief Guest and advisor of the NEGISS, Prof. Upendra Man Malla on his remarks explained the history of geography education in Nepal. He also shared his six decades experience regarding the use and evolution of geospatial technology and geographic information system in Nepal. Prof. Malla was among the persons involved in delineating the 14 zones and 75 districts map of the Nepal, in 1961.
Delivering vote of thanks, Mr. Rajkumar Thapa, the Executive Member of the NEGISS, sincerely acknowledged the Chief Guests, Guests, paper presenters and participants for their gracious presence. He also acknowledged the Women Development Training Academy for providing hall. At the end of the program, delivering closing remarks, the Chair of the program and Vice-president of NEGISS Mrs. Sushila Rajbhandari expressed her heartily appreciation to Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for nominating the NEGISS as the member of Academic Assembly of the NAST.
