Abstract:Urban areas are expanding at a very fast rate worldwide. The task of managing urban growth has increasedin both scope and complexity and has become one of the most important challenges in the 21st century.This talk aims to present applications of Earth observation information and geospatial techniques to examine the urban development process in the KathmanduValley, Nepal. Satellite imageries from 1967 to 2010 and other ancillary information will be explored using geospatial techniques. The participants will have opportunity to see how geospatial techniques can be applied to mirror where and how the urban development in the valley is likely heading by 2050. The talk will also provide a crucial information on land availability for future land development projects suggesting the current urban development process is in critical stage.
